The Best Plans Are the Ones You Change at the Last Minute
Antoniu and I had been planning this surprise proposal in Ronda for weeks. But on the morning of the session, the weather was not looking in our favour. We woke up to clouds and a rain forecast for exactly the time we had planned. Not ideal. But Antoniu did not panic. We got on a call, moved things around, and shortly after, we had a new plan in place.
Ronda is one of those places that, even under a grey sky, it is incredibly beautiful and romantic.
There was just one other thing to figure out.
Catalina had no idea what was actually happening. As far as she knew, they were going on a day trip with a restaurant reservation as the excuse. Antoniu had gently suggested she wear something a bit nicer. She was not having it. It was cloudy. She wanted to be comfortable and warm, and that was that.
So he did what any sensible person would do. He packed her outfit in his backpack without telling her. It also gave him somewhere to hide the ring.
I watched from a distance as it happened. Catalina had no idea I was there. One moment, they were two people enjoying a view. Next, he was on one knee, and she completely lost it. The kind of reaction you cannot fake and cannot plan for.
After the dust settled, Antoniu pulled out the backpack. He handed her the clothes she had refused to wear that morning. She laughed and went to change
What I love about this story is that nothing went to plan, and it was perfect. The weather changed, the outfit negotiation did not go as hoped. And somewhere in the middle of all that scramble and last-minute logistics, he asked her to marry him, and she said yes.
That is usually how the best moments work. Not the ones you script perfectly, but the ones where something goes sideways, and everyone just figures it out together.
