David's marriage proposal at hotel castillo santa Catalina

David emailed me a few months before his trip to Málaga. He was bringing his girlfriend on holiday, and he wanted to propose somewhere during the trip. The problem was that he had only a few days here and had no idea where to do it.

He came with a clear sense of what he was looking for. He wanted somewhere with a nice view. Somewhere that felt romantic. Somewhere with a Spanish feel, and he wanted it private. The whole point, for him, was that it should be an intimate moment between the two of them, with no strangers nearby.

We got on a video call, and I talked him through a few different options. The more we spoke, the clearer it became that Hotel Castillo Santa Catalina would fit everything he was asking for.

Why Castillo Santa Catalina was the right call

I’ve shot several weddings at Castillo Santa Catalina, so I know it well. It sits on a small hill inside the city of Málaga, just ten minutes from the centre. It has amazing views and a historical vibe that blends Spanish and Moorish architecture.

That alone covered most of what David wanted, but we also needed it to be private.

I spoke to the venue, and they agreed to block off a part of the castle, which is normally used for wedding ceremonies, so that they could have complete privacy. The cool thing about this area of the castle is that I could hide on the top of the tower. Not only was that a great vantage point for capturing the proposal, but it also gave the couple a way to feel completely alone, because they could not see me.

For a surprise proposal, this part matters more than people realise until they’re standing there. The second your partner notices a stranger pointing a camera, the moment is already different. Being properly hidden is what lets it stay real.

After the proposal

From there we turned it into an engagement session. The castle has a lot of corners that work for portraits. Stone arches, the old courtyard, the upper terrace looking out across the city. Neither of them is used to being in front of a camera, so I spent the first few minutes joking around with them and getting them comfortable. By the time we were properly shooting, they’d forgotten the camera was there.

A few things worth thinking about if you're proposing in Málaga

Think about your partner, not the location. The most spectacular spot in the city isn’t the right one if she’d feel exposed or watched there. A quieter place with one good view almost always beats a famous one with a hundred strangers in the background.
